First established in 1998 National Payroll Week is an opportunity to celebrate the teams of professionals working tirelessly around the country to keep 29.5 MILLION* Pay As You Earn workers receiving their payslips and hard earned wages each month. The Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) established the event to raise awareness of payroll processing professionals in the UK, helping to demonstrate the impact payroll working has on the UK economy.
The navigation of complex taxation, national insurance and pension legislation not to mention the raft of different statutory leave eligibility, flexi working and let’s not FURLOUGH means that the last 2 years have been a pressurised onslaught of ever changing rules, best educated judgement and late nights.
Technology may have moved on from hand written payslips in a brown envelope but in any payroll office you will still see attentive professionals with beautifully functioning software still wielding a calculator in one hand and a desk calendar of financial weeks in the other double counting dates to ensure no one misses out on their entitlements.
Entrusted with highly personal information and cursed with exceptionally tight deadlines it isn’t a job for the faint hearted. Many small businesses or payroll bureaus operate with one member of staff, solely carrying the burden of responsibility that any delay (or sickness of their own) will result in upset families without wages in their bank accounts on expected paydays.
Tax and national insurance paid to UK government by payroll schemes in the UK accounts for approximately £345 Billion** annually, and every one of these payroll schemes has a payroll professional working away to get the job completed.
So this September 5th – 9th spare a little thought for the professionals in the back offices processing your payslip. Perhaps send them a small gesture or word of thanks for the invaluable task they perform as they go about their work keeping the UK paid month in, month out.
